WINNEBAGO TRAIL CONSERVANCY
Originally part of the Green Lake Conference Center, this 7+ acre property consists of a sloping southern oak forest and remnant prairie along the north shore of Green Lake. The Conference Center offered this property at a discounted price to the Conservancy with the intent of keeping the trail along the lakeshore open to the public. The hiking trail is a 0.9 mile loop with moderate slopes, switchbacks, and a few steps. This former Native American trail follows the elevated shoreline and is accessible from the trailhead near the historic Lawson water tower on Hillside Road. The trail passes under the historic stone arch on Hillside Road.

The History of the Winnebago Trail
Originally part of the Green Lake Conference Center, the Winnebago Trail Conservancy consists of southern oak forest and remnant prairie along the north shore of Green Lake. A former Native American footpath follows the elevated shoreline and offers spectacular views of Sugarloaf and Norwegian Bay. Near the east end of the property, the trail passes under a large 110-year-old stone and concrete arch. The trail is accessible from the trailhead near the historic Lawson water tower on Hillside Road.
The 7+ acre property was purchased for $100,000 in 2009 through a mix funding from the Green Lake Sanitary District, Green Lake Conservancy, and the DNR. The property had existed in a very natural state until around 2012 when work began in earnest to remove buckthorn from the site. The nearly
½ mile hiking trail has Leopold benches situated along the south facing shoreline bluff, providing spots to rest while enjoying some of the best views to be found of Big Green Lake.
