The Green Lake Conservancy (GLC) actively expressed its opposition to the proposed County K Quarry and communicated its concerns that this development was not appropriate, given the proximity to water resources such as natural springs and tributary trout streams. While we are disappointed with the Green Lake County Land Use Planning & Zoning Committee’s decision to approve the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the County K Quarry, we have reached the difficult decision not to challenge it. Considering this approval was within the scope of the County’s current master plan, it highlights the need to develop a revised master plan that recognizes and protects an environmental corridor within the Green Lake Watershed.
While many questions remain about the decision, the CUP does include many conditions intended to safeguard water quality. It will be critical to monitor the developments and ensure that these conditions are being strictly adhered to for many years to come.
GLC is the area’s only non-profit Land Trust, chartered to permanently conserving land, such as Powell Spring and Mitchell Glen, located near the quarry site. Our efforts reinforce those of other organizations that are focused on water quality initiatives. GLC will continue to focus on our land conservation mission to permanently and proactively protect and preserve special places, primarily in the Green Lake watershed and County by offering conservation expertise, strategies and legal tools for the benefit of humans, plants and wildlife.
